Max Kinkle

Max Kinkel, affectionately known as “Super Max,” is a name that resonates with radio enthusiasts across North America. With a career that spanned iconic stations like CKLW in Windsor and WCBS-FM in New York, Max’s dynamic voice and magnetic personality made him a beloved figure on the airwaves. But his journey to becoming a radio legend started far from the bustling cities he would later call home. Born and raised in upstate New York, Max’s path to stardom was shaped by his early love for broadcasting, his service in the U.S. Navy, and his relentless drive to connect with listeners.

Max Kinkel was born in upstate New York, where he grew up surrounded by the sounds of local radio stations that fueled his fascination with broadcasting. As a young boy, he would spend hours listening to DJs spin records and talk to audiences, captivated by the magic of radio. “Radio was my escape,” Max once said. “It was a window to the world beyond my small town.”

This passion for radio only grew stronger during his teenage years. Max began experimenting with sound equipment and dreaming of one day becoming the voice that others would tune in to hear. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served with distinction. His time in the military instilled in him discipline and resilience—qualities that would serve him well throughout his radio career.

After completing his service, Max returned to civilian life determined to pursue a career in broadcasting. He began working at smaller stations across upstate New York, honing his skills as both an on-air personality and a producer. These early years were a proving ground for Max, who quickly developed a reputation for his engaging presence and ability to connect with listeners.

His big break came when he caught the attention of program directors at CKLW, the legendary Windsor-based station that dominated Detroit’s airwaves during the 1960s and 1970s. Known as “The Big 8,” CKLW was a powerhouse of Top 40 radio, reaching millions of listeners across the U.S. and Canada with its tight playlists and high-energy presentation.

Max joined CKLW during its golden age, stepping into a station that was already an institution in North American radio. CKLW’s innovative Drake format—a tightly programmed blend of hits, jingles, and fast-paced DJ segments—had revolutionized Top 40 radio, setting new standards for professionalism and entertainment.

At CKLW, Max found his stride as “Super Max,” bringing boundless energy and charisma to every shift. His voice became synonymous with the station’s dynamic sound, whether he was introducing the latest hits or engaging listeners with witty banter. One of his most memorable moments at CKLW came in 1977 when he interviewed KISS during their meteoric rise to fame. The interview showcased Max’s ability to put artists at ease while delivering compelling content for fans.

“CKLW was like being part of a dream team,” Max later recalled. “The talent there was incredible, and the audience was so passionate—it pushed you to bring your best every single day.”

In the early 1980s, Max transitioned from Detroit to New York City, joining WCBS-FM—a station renowned for its classic hits format and larger-than-life personalities. For Max, this move represented not just a career milestone but also an opportunity to connect with one of the most diverse audiences in broadcasting.

At WCBS-FM, Max became a fixture on overnight shifts, where his warmth and humor resonated deeply with late-night listeners. His shows were marked by an easy rapport with callers and an encyclopedic knowledge of music that kept audiences engaged through the wee hours.

“Max had this way of making you feel like you were part of something special,” recalls longtime listener Maria Hernandez. “Even if it was two in the morning, he made it feel like prime time.”

One standout moment during his WCBS-FM tenure was hosting a live performance by The Regents at the World Trade Center—a testament to his ability to create unforgettable experiences for listeners both on-air and off.

While Max’s career was filled with highlights, it wasn’t without challenges. In October 2006, he suffered serious injuries in an automobile accident that forced him off traditional radio for an extended period. The recovery process was grueling both physically and emotionally, but Max faced it with characteristic determination.

With unwavering support from family and friends, he gradually rebuilt his life—finding new ways to channel his passion for broadcasting even as he adjusted to new realities.

In 2016, Max launched SuperMax Radio—an internet-based platform that allowed him to return to what he loved most: connecting with audiences through music and conversation. This venture wasn’t just about nostalgia; it was about purpose.

A proud Navy veteran himself, Max dedicated SuperMax Radio to supporting servicemen and women. His morning shows—co-hosted with longtime friend Al Ferrari—blended classic tunes with discussions on veterans’ issues, creating a space where music met meaningful dialogue.

“SuperMax Radio is more than just entertainment,” Max explained shortly after its launch. “It’s about giving back—to veterans, to listeners, to anyone who needs a little inspiration.”

Today, Max Kinkel’s legacy extends far beyond his time on-air. His contributions to stations like CKLW and WCBS-FM helped define eras in radio history while setting standards for authenticity and engagement that continue to inspire broadcasters today.
